The Copa Nova Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships is the preeminent competition for Northern Virginia. There will be Gi and No-Gi divisons for adults and children. This competition is associated with the Valhalla series of Mixed Martial Arts competition on the same evening.

REGISTERING YOUR TEAM

If you are competing with fellow teammates: Please make sure you provide the exact same team name as each other during registration. This will ensure accuracy when reporting the results of our tournament.

Example: TEAM RELSON, RELSON GRACIE JIU-JITSU, & RELSON TEAM ARE 3 DIFFERENT TEAMS AS FAR AS THE COMPUTER SYSTEM IS CONCERNED.

These errors, caused by the registrant, will affect the outcome of the team results. Copa NoVA staff is not responsible for adjusting these errors caused by registrants.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

We strive to maintain an accurate and tight schedule of events. To help us out, please register early so we can add you to the appropriate divisions and setup the brackets with minimal problems. Typically, we will have weigh-ins, then start divisions as soon as possible. The Schedule of events are as follows:

8:00AM – Final Registrations and begin weigh-ins
10:00AM – Tournament Begins (Children’s Divisions)
10:30 AM: Teen’s No-Gi, followed by Kids/Teen’s BJJ.
TBD: Advanced, Intermediate, and Beginner Men and Women No-Gi.

** CHILDREN MUST BE WEIGHED IN BEFORE 9AM (SAME DAY WEIGH INS).

RULES & REGULATIONS

At Copa NOVA BJJ, we take safety serious and consider it priority 1. Referees are responsible with the task of officiating in a dynamic and complex set of circumstances. All this while keeping track of points and following the Copa NOVA rule set. With this in mind, referees have the final word and there is no exception to this policy. Please be respectful to our officials as it directly affects the quality of our tournament.

Many takedowns, sweeps, positions and submissions are legal throughout each division of Copa Nova. However, it is important to realize what you can and cannot do. Please download the PRE-REGISTRATION KIT for a detailed outline of the rules for each division we offer. We have included an extra attachment to the rules which is a quick comparison table illustrating the general differences between gi & no-gi divisions as well as experience levels. The table simply shows obvious infractions and where certain techniques become legal based on experience.

Like any sport, please read, study, and understand the rules prior to competing. They can be used to your advantage!

Registration & Rules for Children’s/Teens Divisions

A smooth, well run tournament, along with safety throughout all divisions is paramount to all of the Copa NoVA staff.  This section of our web site emphasizes this commitment by outlining special registration and rules required within the Children’s divisions.  (APPLICABLE TO AGES 4-16 REGISTERED IN CHILDRENS/TEENS DIVISIONS)

1.   Registration:  Children & Teens Must PRE-REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT.  There will be no registrations accepted at the door (day of competition).    These are the first divisions to compete, so to stay on track, we now require online pre-registration.  This can be done directly through this web site.

2.  Weigh in:  Weigh ins can be the night before or the day of the competition.  Remember, you must pre-register online for the tournament. *WEIGH-INS MUST BE DONE BEFORE 9AM FOR THE CHILDREN’S/TEENS DIVISIONS.  Additionally, there will be a $15 fee per division assessed for any division changes (i.e., competitor did not make anticipated weight).  Please click the button below for detailed information.

3.  Experience Levels:  Children & Teens – Less than 1 year experience – BEGINNER.  More than 1 year experience – ADVANCED
This includes wrestling, jiu-jitsu, or other relevant grappling arts.

** Weigh In Statement **

In order to help with tournament progression we are requiring the following registration and weigh in timeframes.

1. Registration:

a. Children & Teens: Must PRE-REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT. There will be no registrations accepted at the door (day of competition). These are the first divisions to compete, so to stay on track, we now require online pre-registration. This can be done directly through this web site.

b.  Adults: Can register online or the same day of the event. If you register the same day of the event you must be weigh in by 10am.

2. Weigh in:

a. Children & Teens: Weigh ins can be the night before or the day of the competition. Remember, you must pre-register online for the tournament. *WEIGH-INS MUST BE DONE BEFORE 9AM FOR THE CHILDREN’S/TEENS DIVISIONS.

b. Adults:  Weigh in for same day registration must be weighed in by 10am the day of the tournament. If you are pre-registered you follow the weigh in deadlines for weighing in.

i. Adult NoGi: 11:30am

ii. Adult Gi: 1pm Note: If you are competing in both NoGi and Gi you must be weighed in at the exact NoGi weigh in deadline. You also must make your weight class. There is a $30 fee per division change at the day of the tournament.  Any competitor who refuses to pay the DIVISION CHANGE FEE will forfeit there registration and fees payed to compete for the day’s events.

Bring your registration sheet to the bracketing table whether you are a pre-registered or same day registered competitor to validate your divisions.

3.  Special Rules Regarding Submissions:  The Copa NoVA staff has to carefully balance competitive freedom with a high level of safety.  With that in mind, we have developed a special set of rules and guidelines for the Children’s divisions.  Below, is a list of the associated changes.

** COPA NOVA STAFF RESERVES THE RIGHT TO STOP ANY MATCH BASED ON JUDGEMENTS REGARDING SAFETY TO THE COMPETITORS.  IN NO EVENT SHALL A PARENT, COACH, GUARDIAN, OR ANY ASSOCIATED ADULT QUESTION THE CALLS MADE BY OUR STAFF.  THIS MAY RESULT IN A DIRECT DISQUALIFICATION OF THE CHILD AND YOU MAY BE ASKED TO LEAVE THE PREMISES.
